Colospa

Colospa (generic name: Mebeverine; brand name: Colofac) is an antispasmodic medicine.

Colospa is indicated for the treatment of the irritable bowel syndrome ('irritable colon', 'spastic colon', 'functional bowel disorders', 'spastic constipation', 'nervous diarrhoea'). Colospa is used to treat the symptoms of this condition, i.e. abdominal pain and cramps, persistent, non-specific diarrhoea (with or without alternating constipation) and flatulence.

Colospa acts directly on the smooth muscle in the gut causing it to relax. It also prevents nerve signals getting through to the muscle in the intestines. This also causes the muscle to relax, preventing painful muscle spasm.

Recommendations

Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. Take Colospa exactly as directed.

The usual dose is one tablet three times a day, preferably before or during meals. After a period of a few weeks when the desired effect has been obtained, the dosage may be gradually reduced.

If you forget to take Colospa, take it as soon as you remember, and then go back to taking your medicine as you would normally. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the dose you missed and take your next dose when it is due. Do not take a double dose to make up for the dose that you missed.

Keep your tablets in a cool dry place where the temperature stays below 30 degrees C.

Precautions

Before taking Colospa, tell your doctor if:

you are allergic to any medicines; or you have lactose intolerance;
