Lopid (generic name: Gemfibrozil; brand names: Jezil / Gen-Fibro) belongs to the group of medicines known as lipid-regulating drugs.

Lopid works by lowering the blood levels of triglycerides and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) ("bad") cholesterol by reducing their production by the liver. It also increases blood levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) ("good") cholesterol.

Lopid helps prevent medical problems caused by cholesterol and fats building up in blood vessels, such as heart disease and other problems.

Recommendations

Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. Take Lopid exactly as directed.

Lopid is usually taken by mouth twice a day 30 minutes before morning and evening meals.

Lopid is most effective when used with a diet that reduces the intake of cholesterol and saturated fats, and an exercise program.

Avoid drinking too much alcohol while you are being treated with Lopid. Alcohol can also increase your cholesterol levels.

Try to take Lopid at the same times each day to avoid missing any doses.

If you do miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember and continue taking it at the usual times. If it is nearly time for your next dose, leave out the missed dose, never take two doses to make up.

Store Lopid in a cool dry place, away from direct light and heat.

Before taking Lopid, tell your doctor if:

you are allergic to any medicines;
you have kidney, liver, or gallbladder disease;
you are pregnant or breast-feeding.
