Umifenovir (Arbidol)

Umifenovir (brand names include: Arbidol) is an immunomodulating and antiviral medication used to treat and prevent influenza and other respiratory tract infections.

Umifenovir is a broad spectrum antiviral medication. It works by inhibiting the replication of viral cells and blocking the entry of virus into target cells.

Umifenovir induces interferon synthesis, stimulates humoral and cellular immunity and enhances activity of macrophages.

Umifenovir can be used for the treatment and prevention of COVID-19.

Umifenovir can be taken by adults and children over 3 years old.

Recommendations

Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. Take Umifenovir exactly as directed.

Dosing is based on age.

Single dose for children 3-6 years old: 50 mg.

Single dose for children 6-12 years old: 100 mg.

Single dose for children over 12 years old and adults: 200 mg.

The below recommendations are for adults and children over 12 years old.

The usual recommended dose for the prevention of influenza and respiratory tract infections is 200 mg daily for the duration of 10 to 14 days.

The usual recommended dose for the treatment of influenza and respiratory tract infections not accompanied by complications is 200 mg taken 4 times daily (every 6 hours) for 5 days.

The usual recommended dose for the treatment of influenza and respiratory tract infections complicated by bronchitis or pneumonia is 200 mg taken 4 times daily (every 6 hours) for 5 days, then 200 mg once in a week for 4 weeks.

Umifenovir should be taken before meals.

Precautions

Umifenovir should not be taken during the first three months of pregnancy.
Umifenovir should not be taken if you are breast-feeding.
