Differin (generic name: adapalene; brand names inlude: Adapen / Adaferin) is a third-generation topical retinoid primarily used in the treatment of acne.

Differin is a gel used for the treatment of acne (blackheads, whiteheads and pimples) of the face, chest or back.

Differin gel is a clear gel that powers deep inside your pores to control the buildup that leads to acne. It helps prevent the formation of new acne lesions, and can also help get rid of lesions already present.

Differin works under the skin surface to unclog pores and clear up pimples.

Differin acts against the abnormal skin processes associated with acne.

Differin is supplied in 15 g tubes containing adapalene gel 0.1%.

Recommendations

Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. Use Differin exactly as directed.

Differin is best applied after washing and drying your skin.

Apply a thin layer of gel to the affected areas once daily at bedtime. Avoid the eyes, lips and nose. Do not allow this preparation to come into contact with the mucous membranes (e.g. mouth, vagina, inside of nose etc.). Try not to touch the treated areas overnight.

Do not use any harsh soaps or exfoliants while you are being treated with Differin. Differin should not be used on broken, sunburnt or infected skin.

You may notice a slight change of colour of the skin you are applying this preparation to. This is only temporary and should return to normal soon after finishing treatment with Differin.

Continue using Differin until no new acne spots appear. You may need to use it for several months. You should notice some clinical improvement after 4-8 weeks and more improvement after further use.

There may be a worsening of acne during the first few weeks of therapy because Differin promotes the growth of pimples that have begun to form but are not yet visible. Therefore, treatment should not be stopped if acne appears to be worsening.

Use a sunscreen cream and wear protective clothing if exposure to strong or prolonged sunlight cannot be avoided. Weather extremes such as wind or cold may also be irritating.

Avoid the use of oil-based makeups and creams. Cosmetic products with an abrasive, drying or peeling action may cause an extra irritant effect.

Differin topical gel should be used with caution by nursing mothers and only in areas away from the chest.

Store Differin in a cool, dry place, away from direct heat and light.

Precautions

Before using Differin, tell your doctor if:
