Zantac (generic name: ranitidine; brand names include: Monorin / Histac / Ranitil) is in a class of medications called H2 blockers. It decreases the amount of acid made in the stomach. Reducing stomach acid helps to reduce heartburn, to heal irritation of the esophagus, and to heal ulcers of the stomach or intestines.

Zantac is used for treating certain conditions that cause your body to make too much stomach acid (eg, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome). It is also used to treat ulcers of the small intestine that have not responded to other treatment.

Zantac is effective for short-term and maintenance treatment of gastric ulcer and is also used to treat irritation and ulceration of the stomach caused by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

Follow the directions on your prescription or the package label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take Zantac exactly as directed.

Continue to use Zantac even if you feel well. Do not miss any doses.

If you miss a dose of Zantac, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Store this medicine in a cool, dry place, away from direct heat and light.

Tell your doctor before taking Zantax, if:

you have ever had an allergic reaction to this or any other medicine;
you have kidney problems or porphyria (a blood disorder);
you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant or are breast-feeding.
